    This Date in 1920

The major leagues saw all eight scheduled games played on August 3, 1920. It was a bit of an all or nothing day as four games generated no more than five runs, three of those ending in 3-1 scores. The other four games generated at least twelve runs, with two fifteen run contests as the high scoring games of the day.

Ross Youngs of the Giants takes home best offensive game of the day honors as he helps down the Reds 11-1. Youngs posts a three for four day with a walk, a triple and a home run. This is Youngs’s second time recording best game of the day, and the third time he was in the running. Each of these great offensive days included triples. Youngs would hit 93 triples in a ten year career, breaking double digits five times. He is on a hot streak batting .476/.535/.651 in his last 16 games.

Red Farber of the White Sox pitches the best game of the day according to game scores, beating out Herb Pennock of the Red Sox 74-73. Farber, in a 3-1 win against the Yankees, allows five hits but also walked five batters. He struck out six. Pennock, in a 3-1 win against the Tigers, allowed six hits but did not walk a batter, only striking out two. That actually seems like a better afternoon to me. Farber, however, faced a much tougher opponent. Three of his walks were to Babe Ruth, one intentional, and that strategy may have been imposed on him. So Farber will indeed take home best pitched game of the day honors.

Jim Bagby of the Indians wins his twenty second game of the season as Cleveland beats Washington 10-5. He leads the AL and the majors in that category.

Tris Speaker of the Indians goes on for three in that game to reduce his batting average to .418. George Sisler of the Browns takes advantage of the drop to close the gap a bit, his three for four day raising his batting average to .402.

In the NL, the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 11-4. Coupled with the Giants win over the Reds, the Dodgers hold a 2 1/2 game lead for the league title. The Giants remain five games back as the three teams wind up evenly spaced.

    Beat the Streak Picks

For the past few years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. MLB is not offering the game during the short 2020 season, but people indicated they can still use the data. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit. If you find this useful, please support Baseball Musings with a donation.

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

Both systems agree on LeMahieu as the top pick, with McNeil and Urshela tied for the consensus second pick. I’m surprised anyone lists as expected to do well against Soroka.

Donovan Solano leads the NL in batting average at .484. His probability of hitting .400 for the season stands at 0.0043. At this point he would need to go 0 for 8 to fall below .400.

    Ohtani Trouble

Shohei Ohtani gets an MRI after complaining of discomfort in his arm after another poor pitching performance.

I thought the Angels should have stopped using him as a pitcher once his elbow became balky. Here’s a post from two years ago:

I see this as a mistake. Ohtani might be an all-star as a hitter, and he likely will hit well enough to give the Angels a good return on their investment. If he blows out his elbow pitching, he will be lost to the team for at least a year, no bat, no arm. I felt the same way when Bo Jackson decided to play football. Why risk a long and profitable baseball career for a stunt?

The ulnar collateral ligament that limited the two-way player to hitting over the previous several weeks wasn’t a problem, or so the pitcher and manager insisted.

Part of his comes from Ohtani wanting to pitch. The Angels should have insisted otherwise, and right now they would own a middle of the order than could compete with any team.

    Best Batter Today

The Astros 6-5 win over the Angels produced three of the top five batters in the Baseball Musings Batter Ratings. 就爱加速器官网 remains on top after a two for six day that also produced a home run. Anthony Rendon moves into second place with a double and two walks in his six trips to the plate. 肥鸟加速安卓下载 produced the best day of the three, three for four with a walk and a double. He takes the fifth slot.

加速器破解版安卓‘s one for four day for the Dodgers drops him to third place, while Nelson Cruz of the Twins matched Muncy’s day and winds up in fourth place.

Aaron Judge moves up to eighteenth place with his five game home run streak in which he hit six dingers. Note that Camden Yards and Yankee Stadium are high run environments, so the game scores he generates get knocked down a bit due to that. He moved up quite a bit however, as he ranked 64th at the start of the streak.

    There Goes the Judge

Aaron Judge just hit his second home run of the Sunday night game against the Red Sox. That gives the Yankees a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth. That gives him six home runs for the season, all in his last five games. It was a monster shot, and makes one wonder if he could 30 home runs in this short season.

It’s been a slugfest, as each team hit three home runs, Xander Bogaerts hitting two for the Red Sox.

    Outfield Trouble

Aaron Hicks of the Yankees misjudged two fly balls in the top of the third inning against Boston on the Sunday night game. The first dropped on the warning track and bounced over the fence for a double, leading to a big inning for Boston. On the last out of the inning, Hicks started in on a fly ball, then recovered but didn’t look comfortable. Once again, I wonder if outfielders are missing cues they get from the fans; fans tracking the ball and noise giving them a clue as to when they are approaching the wall.

The Red Sox lead the Yankees 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning. Aaron Judge homered earlier and has not homered in five straight games, three short of tying the record.

The Indians and Twins finish their series with Aaron Civale facing Twins opener Tyler Clippard. Civale’s first start of the season proved a nice follow up to his rookie year. The Nationals converted him to a reliever in 2009, and he did not start again until 2018 with Toronto. He has not pitched that well in the role, as opponents hit .269/.321/.615 against him, seven for twenty six with a double, triple, and two home runs.

All sixteen teams play the nine scheduled games on August 2, 1920, including a doubleheader between the Tigers and the Red Sox. The Indians beat the Senators 2-0 in Cleveland for the low scoring game of the day, one of many games reported in the paper to have late inning heroics. In this case, it was pinch hitter George Burns doubling in the only runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. At the high end, the Brown trounced the Athletics 10-8.

Babe Ruth of the Yankees once again takes home best offensive game of the day honors in the 7-0 win over the White Sox in Chicago. The Sultan of Swat collects two hits and two walks in five plate appearances, hitting a double and his 38th home run to lead the majors. Only one team owns more home runs than Ruth, the Phillies with 41. The next closest teams are the Browns and Athletics with 32.

Stan Coveleski of the Indians wins best pitched game of the day with his shutout of the Senators. He allows just five hits and two walks in nine innings, striking out six batters along the way. A look at the leaders link above, shows that Coveleski is not only among the leaders in the work stats (starts, innings, etc.) but one with a low ERA and a high strikeout rate. He ranks fifth in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points through 8/2, but first in Bill James Cy Young points.

Tris Speaker of the Indians goes 1 for 2 with two walks to stay well above .400 at .419. George Sisler of the Browns does gain on Speaker a little with a 3 for 5 day, now batting .398.

Tyler Cowen suggests a penalty for positive tests to keep baseball players healthy:

… dock a player 30 percent of his salary if he tests positive.  That should limit the degree of nightclubbing and carousing, keeping in mind that the already-infected are probably some of the worst offenders and they have been “taken care of.”

If need be, the fines can be redistributed to the players who never test positive, thus keeping total compensation constant.

The short season provides an opportunity for some hitter to take advantage of the small sample size of the season to hit .400. As of today, there are twelve players that qualify for the league lead with batting averages of .400 or better. Over the years I developed a formula to calculate the chance of a player hitting .400 based on their Musings Marcels batting average prediction and their expected number of at bats based on how much they played this season. This spreadsheet does the calculation for the twelve .400 hitters. It should be fairly easy to keep up to date as the season progresses.

Right now, 92加速安卓版 of the Giants, with a .458 BA, owns the highest probability at 0.003. That’s three chances in 1000, which indicates just how difficult it is to hit .400 in any short playing span. Note that most of the players at the top of the list own high Marcels predictions for their batting averages. Kyle Lewis of the Mariners, currently batting .455, ranks 11th in terms of probability since his predicted BA is just .265.

Feel free to follow along as the season progresses.

The Indians and Twins continue their AL rivalry in Minnesota as Carlos Carrasco faces Kenta Maeda. Carrasco continues to pitch after battling leukemia in 2019, and made a fine first start of the season. He struck out ten and walked one batter in six innings, giving up two runs. Maeda pitched five innings in his first start, also walking one batter. He struck out six, with the two runs against him coming on a home run.

In the NL Central, Pittsburgh visits Chicago with Mitch Keller facing Tyler Chatwood. Keller pitched an extremely unusual season as a rookie in 2019. He struck out 65 and walked 16 in 48 innings. Those are excellent numbers for a rookie. Somehow, he managed to give up 72 hits, six of them home runs. That resulted in a 7.13 ERA. His BABIP came in at an unbelievable .475. The season was so unusual, his FIP was four runs lower than his ERA. In his first start of the year, he walked three and struck out just two in five innings, but allowed just two hits. I guess he decided to do a George Costanza and do the opposite of everything.

Chatwood owns a 4.76 ERA at home with the Cubs. It comes from wildness, as he walked 81 batters in 109 2/3 innings.

    Enjoy!

    Late Excitement

Normally I’d say the fans who left early missed a great game, but last night it was fans who turned off the TV early. It started in Atlanta where the Braves found themselves down 10-5 to the Mets in the middle of the sixth inning. Atlanta got one back in the bottom of that inning. Then in the eighth, a series of singles and walks led to two runs scoring and the bases loaded with two out. Former Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud comes to the plate and clears the bases for a double, giving Atlanta an 11-10 lead, the final of the game.

The Padres and Rockies played a back and forth game, four times during the game a team retaking the lead. Down 5-4 in the ninth, the Padres scored four times in the top of the inning. With two out, 就爱加速安卓版, Jr. homered, then a walk, a stolen base, and an intentional walk led to a Tommy Pham three-run homer. The Rockies got two back in the bottom of the inning, the first run coming on a bases loaded walk with two out. That led to Drew Pomeranz coming on in relief to get 就爱加速官网 for the win.

Finally, Arizona scored four times in the bottom of the eighth against the Dodgers to turn a deficit into a 5-3 win. The big hit of the inning was another bases clearing double, this time by 就爱加速器官网. An error by 就爱加速器官网 set up the inning, and all the runs were unearned.

The parity of the divisions continue with 26 teams within 2 1/2 games of first place.

    This Date in 1920

The majors saw all six scheduled games played to completion on 加速器破解版安卓. The White Sox shutout the Yankees 3-0 in Chicago for the low scoring game of the day. The Yankees are the first hurdle the White Sox will need to pass if they are going to reclaim the AL pennant. At the high end of scoring, the Browns blew out the Athletics 12-3 in St. Louis.

Baby Doll Jacobson of the Browns provided the much of the oomph in that contest, winning best offensive game of the day. He collects four hits in five trips to the plate, doubling three times (a triple double!) and driving in five runs.

Jacobson did not stick in the majors until 1919, his seasonal age 28 season. He missed 1918 due to World War I. Despite his late start, he hit and fielded well, and averaged nearly 4.0 rWAR a season from 1919 through 1925. His nickname has a great back story. He was a huge man for the time:

“Everybody called me Bill until that day in Mobile. It was opening day and a band was playing. Just before the first pitch, they struck up ‘Oh, You Beautiful Doll,’ a popular song at the time. Well, I led off with a homer on the first pitch and a lady sitting behind the plate jumped up and shouted: ‘You must be that beautiful doll they were talking about.’ The name stuck with me and that was it.” 1 The next day’s Mobile Register ran his photograph with the caption “That Baby Doll.”2

The 1920 would be his best, playing 154 games with a .355/.402/.501 slash line.

On the pitching side, Eddie Cicotte of the White Sox earned the shutout against the Yankees for best pitched game of the day. He allows five hits and four walks while striking out seven. It’s his second shutout in a row, also a best of the day award.

Tris Speaker of the Indians goes two for four to raise his league leading batting average to .419, 23 points higher than Joe Jackson of the White Sox. The top three all had good days as Jackson goes three for three and George Sisler of the Browns posts a two for four day.

With the Senators beating the Indians 8-5, the White Sox gain on both New York and Cleveland. The Indians lead the Yankees three games and the White Sox by 4 1/2 games.

In the NL, the league leading Dodgers beat the Cardinals 6-1 in Brooklyn, while the rival Giants help the Dodgers cause with a comeback 3-2 win over the Reds at the Polo Grounds. The Giants were shutout until the bottom of the ninth. With two out and none on, four hits in a row secured the victory. Brooklyn now leads the NL by 1 1/2 games over the Reds, while the Giants move into third place six games out.
